And should investors continue to think of Bitcoin -- the leader of cryptocurrencies -- as digital gold? ## **Currencies or stores of value?** There are some similarities between these two very different assets. Gold was once a universal currency, and Bitcoin is called a currency. Yet today, neither are actual currencies. Gold was first used as money in Asia Minor around 600 BCE and spread throughout the world as an everyday currency, via gold coins. Even after most nations switched to paper currencies, those were typically backed by gold -- a system known as [the gold standard](https://www.fool.com/terms/g/gold-standard/?utm_source=globeandmail&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=article&referring_guid=f624cd3c-cabf-4614-9677-da614f431a81). But during the past century, that too was abandoned. Today the shiny metal is a store of value, but very rarely used as a medium of exchange. Bitcoin was created by the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009. It was meant to eventually become an exchange medium that would supplant the dollar and other fiat currencies. Image source: Getty Images. Realistically, Bitcoin too is more of a store of value -- and a speculative investment -- than a currency. Sure, there are some merchants and companies that accept payments in Bitcoin, but economists generally consider it far too volatile to be used as a medium of exchange. That's why those merchants may accept Bitcoin as payment, but they're usually pricing their goods in far less volatile dollars or other major fiat currencies. While Bitcoin enthusiasts will argue that government-issued currencies like the dollar also change in value over time due to inflation, that change tends to be slow, steady, and -- most importantly -- predictable. The value of Bitcoin, in contrast, is all over the map. The crypto sees huge price swings, sometimes increasing or falling by thousands of dollars in a day. That volatility alone renders it virtually unusable as a currency. ## **The outlook** What does the future hold for the two asset classes? Gold continues to climb due to a couple of concrete factors. It retains its status as a haven in times of financial stress. Today, concerns about geopolitical tensions, stubbornly high inflation, and tariff-induced chaos in the global trading system are pushing many investors to the safety of gold, driving its price higher. More important at the moment is central bank buying. Central banks and other government institutions around the world are in the midst of a gold accumulation run as they seek to diversify their holdings away from dollar-denominated assets. The trend began in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine, and the U.S. reacted by freezing Russia's foreign exchange reserves. Central banks have purchased more than 1,000 tons of gold each year for the past three years, and it seems that they have no plans to slow their shopping spree. A recent survey by the World Gold Council found that 43% of central banks said they would continue to increase their gold reserves, and 95% believed that overall gold reserves will continue to rise over the next 12 months. So it seems that the price of gold will continue to climb for the foreseeable future. ## **Digital gold, or not?** Gold also tends to perform well in times of financial stress and elevated inflation, while Bitcoin price moves show no such pattern. Bitcoin's value is driven by supply and demand (as are most commodities and assets), but the crypto tends to be more speculative, and major price moves often result from waxing or waning popularity alone. To be sure, despite its [high volatility](https://www.fool.com/investing/stock-market/types-of-stocks/volatile-stocks/?utm_source=globeandmail&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=article&referring_guid=f624cd3c-cabf-4614-9677-da614f431a81), Bitcoin has been a good investment for those who got in early and held on. Just three years ago, it was trading at less than $20,000, and today, it's worth more than five times that. # Crypto and Precious Metals Surge amid Global Economic Cooldown Cryptocurrency and precious metals have risen in price. Behind this growth are global economic uncertainties and a growing desire of investors to protect their capital in safe-haven assets. The global economy is in turmoil, and investors are running to less risky assets as it becomes more uncertain. While precious metals like gold and silver have long been known as solid buys in problematic times, a new commodity is on the block: cryptocurrency. This signals a new phase, where Bitcoin and altcoins are no longer a risk asset class. ## Cryptocurrency and Gold Price Rises Many have long espoused the virtue of Bitcoin being a new form of gold and this past week, the theory may have been proven right. As of October 7th, the price stands at $123,656, down from a record high above $125,000. Despite remaining volatile, it has risen by roughly a third since the start of the year. It is not just Bitcoin either, altcoins were also rocketing upwards. The [cryptocurrency prices live](https://www.binance.com/en/price) show ETH at $4668, also down from a spike to $4716. All of this happened just as gold boomed. Since January 1st, it has risen by 50% and since 2018 has been continuing upwards, rising 300%. It soared past the $3,900 a troy ounce level. This is the unit of weight for precious metals and equates to 31.1 grams. Predictions are that it will move through the $4,000 per troy ounce barrier in the next few days. Gold has now seen its biggest rally since the seventies. ## Why Are Bitcoin and Gold So Bullish? The biggest factor in the rise has been global uncertainty. Policies on [trade tariffs](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/14/business/economy/us-china-trade-tariffs-global-economy.html) started this, casting doubt on the strength of the global economy. Since then, geopolitical tensions have increased across the globe. There is also a worry about national debt levels. Japan and Europe are struggling. The US Dollar has also slipped around 10% this year, casting doubts on the major global currency. Not only that, but the Japanese yen, always viewed as a safe-haven currency, is also under pressure. Despite the election of the country's first female prime minister in Sanae Takaich, stocks surged, but the currency continued to fall. This has caused people to run into the arms of the debasement trade. This is when investors believe inflation and debt make precious metals and assets a better bet than stocks and shares. Finally, the government shutdown in the US will delay many of the key macroeconomic reports. Binance noted that key U.S. data releases (ISM PMI, Nonfarm Payrolls) and a joint SEC–CFTC roundtable on regulatory coordination could have shaped market sentiment. Yet these will now not arrive at all, with Polymarket suggesting that there is a 67% chance the shutdown will last longer than 10 days. This means investors are essentially feeling their way in the dark, with no data on how the US is doing economically. ## The Rise in Bitcoin When it comes to Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, October is usually a bullish month anyway. Binance noted that it has posted positive October returns in 9 of the last 11 years, averaging 20%. Current market positioning suggests reduced volatility compared to previous cycles, partly due to institutional BTC ownership rising from 0.9% in 2014 to 19.8% today. Behind global economic conditions and uncertainty, there has been a perfect storm building over the last year that has pushed crypto onwards. Firstly, this has involved more favourable conditions for cryptocurrencies in the US and beyond, with better regulatory conditions. This has included changes such as the GENIUS Act, which has set out laws on the use of stablecoins in the United States. Added to this have been institutional investments. Countries have begun to develop their own reserves of Bitcoin, with the US doing so at the federal and state levels. Corporations have also begun to adopt Bitcoin and altcoins into their reserves, with many now seeing the benefits of this long-term strategy. JPMorgan‘s analysts have said that Bitcoin could be undervalued. This may be as high as 40% when compared to gold and taking into account volatility adjustments. There is also a sentiment that further rate cuts are fuelling this, with the prospect causing people to take bigger and riskier assets. However, Binance has pointed out that Bitcoin’s link to Fed policy is weak and volatile. Prices usually already reflect expected cuts, so the real impact depends on how Fed actions differ from expectations and the broader economic context. Stablecoin prices are also up. Binance noted that USDe supply grew 43.5% in August to US$12.2B, capturing 4% of the stablecoin market. It became the fastest asset to surpass US$10B, reaching the milestone in 536 days versus USDC’s 903 and USDT’s 2000+. This has continued in the last month, with CRCL up 115% since June. This issuance has also sent native tokens upwards, including SOL and HYPE. ## Institutional Momentum and the Path Ahead While October’s seasonal trends and recent market movements have helped Bitcoin gain ground, a more significant force is shaping the crypto landscape: institutional adoption. This shift is turning Bitcoin from a volatile speculative asset into a more stable, long-term store of value. This suggests that Bitcoin has now reached the place many predicted it would, a digital equivalent of gold. Its decoupling from the U.S. dollar signals that it’s being viewed less as a speculative play and more as a store of value. Binance Research notes that “the traditional four-year market cycle is nearing the end of the bull run, but this time may differ. Institutional Bitcoin ownership has risen from 0.9% in 2014 to 19.8% now, which could mean smaller pullbacks.” For you as an investor, that shift is significant. As institutions hold more Bitcoin and adopt longer-term strategies, the asset may start to behave more like gold, steadying during volatility and strengthening its role as a modern safe haven. With this rise, it’s no surprise that many altcoins have followed suit, and stablecoins could be next. The takeaway? Both Bitcoin and gold now sit at the heart of a changing financial landscape. As global uncertainty continues, the assets you once viewed as risky are increasingly becoming the world’s new safe havens. Daily volume remains above its moving average, reinforcing participation, yet the absence of bullish reversal signals on the 4-hour chart suggests sellers retain control. The near-term objective is for BTC to test the daily TBO Fast line near $115,500—a level that would also coincide with short-term overhead resistance and the top of the cloud. A successful tag of this line would “close” last Friday’s TBO Close Long signal and potentially set the stage for a move toward $130,000 by month-end. **Ethereum Chart Behavior** Ethereum suffered a 3.4% decline but similarly held a higher low, reflecting buying support around the $4,000 area. Persistent higher lows across both BTC and ETH denote strong bids at key levels, suggesting the market deems current prices attractive. If Bitcoin achieves the expected 17% rally to $130,000, ETH is likely to follow, potentially challenging $5,000. However, traders should monitor for concrete bullish reversal signals before scaling exposure. **Market Capitalization and Dominance Metrics** Combined stablecoin dominance shows early signs of weakening, with the daily RSI rolling over. A green close in BTC could trigger a red candle in stablecoin dominance, setting up a potential decline toward 6%, or a 13% retracement from current levels. Although 4-hour bearish reversal signals remain absent, they may emerge soon. Bitcoin dominance’s daily RSI is waning, yet a push toward 61% remains plausible. WOL owns the **Peny Property** (the "Property"), comprised of fifteen mineral claims totaling 3,204 hectares in the Snow Lake district in Manitoba, Canada. **Peny Property**The Peny Property is located approximately 25 kilometres north-east of the town of Snow Lake, Manitoba. The Peny Property is prospective for Lithium Pegmatite and Volcanic Massive Sulphide ("VMS") style mineralization which is known to occur in the local area. The Property encompasses rocks belonging to the Churchill Province and comprises metamorphic and metasedimentary rocks; predominantly Felsic and Arkosic Gniess's including arkose, arenite, and quartzite-derived gneiss and migmatite belonging to the Sickle Group, Missi Group and Sickle Metamorphic Suite. The Property is located adjacent to the formally producing Osborne Lake VMS Mine previously operated by the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co, where historical workers report wallrock are intruded by coarse-grained, sheared pegmatite. While the limited historical work on the property indicates that mineralization may include copper and zinc, the Company intends to refocus the asset on the exploration of lithium, which has proven successful at neighbouring sites. **Terms of Transaction**Under the terms of the Agreement, the Company has agreed to acquire all of the issued and outstanding shares of WOL and, in consideration of which, the Company will issue to the WOL shareholders a total of 13,000,000 common shares (the "Consideration Shares") at a deemed price of $0.095 per share for total consideration of $1,235,000.
